چکیده

The tunic is a peculiar integumentary tissue covering the epidermis of ascidians and other tunicates. It is an extracellular matrix whose outermost surface is revealed to be a continuos layer called tunic cuticle, composed of electron dense fibrous materials. Mechanisms occurring during the growth of the animal after metamorphosis, must assure the maintenance of the thin tunic cuticle density and integrity as it represents the primary body surface barrier preventing the mechanical and microbial assaults. Investigations by optical and electron microscopy on tunic samples from young Ciona intestinalis, allowed us to study morphological relationship between the tunic cuticle architecture and granulocytic cellular groups that are located next to it and the involvement of them on its formation.

Contrasting global genetic patterns in two biologically similar, widespread and invasive Ciona species (Tunicata, Ascidiacea)

Human-mediated dispersal interplays with natural processes and complicates understanding of the biogeographical history of species. This is exemplified by two invasive tunicates, Ciona robusta (formerly Ciona intestinalis type A) and C. intestinalis (formerly Ciona intestinalis type B), globally distributed and sympatric in Europe. By gathering new mitochondrial sequences that were merged with ...

Microscopic features of the tunic in young Styela canopus (Tunicata, Styelidae)

The tunic is a unique tissue in metazoans covering the epidermis of ascidians and other tunicates. The tunic is a multifunctional tissue that provides support, mechanical rigidity, and protection against infection and predation. The outermost surface of it is covered by a thin continuous layer called tunic cuticle. The tunic cuticle density and integrity must be maintained during the growth of ...

Ciona

What is Ciona? Ciona is a genus of sea squirts or ascidians. The best known species are Ciona intestinalis from Europe, and Ciona savignyi from Japan; both are now invasive species in the USA. All Ciona species are marine and live attached to rocks or any submerged hard surfaces such as ropes, chains and boat hulls. What do they look like? At first sight, Ciona look like blobs of clear jelly, u...

Transcriptomes of the Premature and Mature Ovaries of an Ascidian, Ciona intestinalis

Oogenesis and folliculogenesis are key steps in reproduction leading to preservation of species. Oocytes are generated from primordial germ cells, mature in the ovaries, and full-grown oocytes are ovulated into oviducts. In vertebrates, follicle maturation is regulated by both the hypothalamus– pituitary–gonad (HPG) axis and the HPG axis-independent process. The former is initiated after pubert...

Identification of thirty-four transcripts expressed specifically in hemocytes of Ciona intestinalis and their expression profiles throughout the life cycle.

The innate immunity of ascidian hemocytes is considered to be a prototype of that in vertebrates. In this study, we identified as many transcripts as possible that were expressed specifically in hemocytes of Ciona intestinalis, a ubiquitous species of ascidian. Using a large-scale whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) technique and young adult specimens of C. intestinalis, 34 such transcript...
